National role for Adelaide bishop

Brenton Edwards December 10, 2015

The National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Council of the Anglican Church has appointed Bishop Chris McLeod to the role of National Aboriginal Bishop.

Chris was consecrated Assistant Bishop of the Adelaide Anglican Diocese in April 2015, in a landmark appointment as South Australia’s first Aboriginal Bishop.

His new role is a national extension to this position and Chris says he feels “humbled and honoured” to be given the additional responsibility.

“My aims are to give encouragement to and be encouraged by Aboriginal Anglicans around Australia,” Chris says.

“To be an Aboriginal voice at General Synod through the house of bishops and to advocate on Aboriginal issues and concerns where needed.

“Walking alongside Aboriginal people, listening to their stories, listening to their dreams, their struggles, that’s the starting place.”

Chris, who is of Gurindji descent, has been involved in ministry among and beside Aboriginal people in Anglican orders for more than 20 years.

Strengthening ties between the Church and Aboriginal communities will remain a key concern for him.

“I think it’s about helping people who are Aboriginal think about spirituality in their lives and their own stories, and where the Christian faith might fit into that as well,” Chris says

“Assisting those who have been Anglican to reconnect with their Anglican roots and with those who are already attending church, giving them some support and encouragement.

“It is a responsibility that I intend to perform with integrity and to the best of my ability.”
