Bishop Geoff Smith was installed as the 10th Bishop and 5th Archbishop of Adelaide and Metropolitan of South Australia during a special service at St Peter's Cathedral on Friday night.
Those in attendance included His Excellency the Honourable Hieu Van Le AC, The Right Honourable Lord Mayor of Adelaide Martin Haese, Senior Kuarna Custodian Mr Karl Telfer, Bishops and Registrars from around Australia, and heads of Anglican schools.
The Installation Service reflected a number of historic Anglican traditions and customs. These features dramatise the arrival of a new Diocesan Bishop at the doors of the Cathedral Church of the Diocese.
The two primary symbols of the installation, responsibilities and spiritual authority bestowed upon the Diocesan Bishop are the historic Bishop’s Staff (‘The Short Staff’, named after the first Bishop of Adelaide, Augustus Short), and the Bishop’s seat (the ‘cathedra’).
