On 29 June 1869 Bishop Augustus Short laid the foundation stone of St Peter’s Cathedral.
What might those who gathered with him on that day have imagined for the future of this inspired and visionary new beginning?
One hundred and fifty years later, Festival 150 is our opportunity to honour them - to celebrate their faith, courage and generosity and to build on their legacy as we continue to imagine the future with imagination, purpose and grace.
Festivities will kick off with an evening service on December 2 titled First Chords: Celebrating the return of the Cathedral Organ.
The service will include:
Hearing the organ played publicly for the first time since its restoration
Prayers of blessing and thanksgiving
A musical tribute to C.H.H. Parry (‘Jerusalem’, ‘I was glad’)
Launch of Festival 150
The Festival 150 programme will then offer a range of celebratory events across 2019.
