Bishop Sophie Relf-Christopher

Bishop Sophie Relf-Christopher is an assistant bishop in the Anglican Diocese of Adelaide, part of the Anglican Church of Australia. She was born in London and moved to Adelaide as a child. As a young adult Sophie served in a variety of lay roles in the diocese including liturgical assistant, community visitor and youth minister.  Sophie was grateful to serve curacies in the parishes of Brighton with Bishop Chris McLeod, and Glenelg with the late Reverend Tony Tamblyn. She was ordained to the diaconate in 2010, and priesthood in 2011.

Bishop Sophie deeply valued her first incumbency as the parish priest of Broadview and Enfield from 2012 until 2016. That year she became the parish priest at St Jude’s Brighton where she served until being consecrated as bishop in 2024. During her time at Brighton, the dynamic parish flourished, developing numerous social justice outreach programs for all-ages.

Sophie was a Canon of St Peter’s Cathedral Chapter from 2019, and the Archdeacon of Sturt from 2022.

Before becoming a priest, Sophie taught film and television production, and communications studies at UniSA, ran a divisional mentoring program, and worked to support university students with low retention rates through the National Center for Student Equity in Higher Education

Bishop Sophie holds a BA in communications, a Bachelor of Theology, and a Master of Theology. Her master’sdissertation researched the Diocese’s cultural health, a subject about that she has written and thought deeply about.

Despite the challenges faced by the modern Church, Sophie believes that God is still at work in Adelaide, and that the church is called to advocate for the downtrodden, share hope, and uphold the cause of the oppressed. Sophie aims to assist the Diocese of Adelaide to be faithful, connected, courageous, marked by compassion and justice.

Sophie is married with two sons.
